Running a successful hair salon or beauty shop means you not only have a great knowledgeable staff but excellent customer service. It means welcoming them into your facility with a nice greeting and positive attitude. This means not rushing a client out the door when they are finished. Keep them there talking about whatever it is they have on their minds that day. The longer they are in your salon the more apt they are to buy salon products and in our case Aveda products.
Take the time to greet them when they come in the door and put their coat on the coat racks yourself and don’t make them do it. Have a comfortable area for them to wait if they need to for a short while. Have an engaging receptionist in the waiting area to entertain them of sorts. Offer them a beverage or a magazine that has current styles and gossip for them. If you are equipped with a television then perhaps offer them a channel they might enjoy such as HGTV or E news.
When they are in your beauty salon chair take the time to listen to them and what they want to get out of the service. This is their time to relax so let them. This is not the time to tell them all of your life stories. You can add inflections to create conversations but this is not your share time. They have come to be pampered and not become your therapist.
When you shampoo their hair do not rush. You learned therapeutic massage in cosmetology school so use it. Many clients love the way a person will cut their hair but feel cheated when it comes to the shampooing. It is personal touch that can make or break your client roster. Also good customer personnel interaction is important.
So don’t put your own career or business future hung up to dry on the coat racks of your salon. Take the time to get back to basics and be the service industry that hairstyling was created to be. Listen to your clients instead of them listening to you. Take the time to give them extra pampering and extra care. In our stressful world they need it. And you need it too to stay in business.
